My training in Functional Neurology has taught me that the Brain is a tattletale. Yes, I said tattletale! It will tell on you every single time. When you start having problems with sugar metabolism, the Brain will kick into survival mode. The Brain places top priority on keeping you alive and dropping what it feels are less important like short-term memory.
You know, you walk into a room and forget why you walk in there. Then you start having difficulty processing things like simple math or a job you may have done 15 or 20 years suddenly requires more thought. You’re starting to have to write yourself notes. Keep this in mind, when your blood sugar goes above 127mg/dl it causes brain cells to expire, never to return.
We look at the gut. Yes, the gut. I’m talking about the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. How you process food, nutrients and how you absorb sugar. If the gut becomes inflamed, if the gut leaks, you may not be absorbing the vital nutrients your body needs.
If you don’t absorb nutrients that the brain needs, the appetite center in the brain will make you start craving things that you normally wouldn’t eat. High carbohydrate and starchy foods that makes your waistline expand and the numbers on the scale go up!
Now wait a minute, did I just say that blood sugar imbalances cause weight gain? Yes I did. You see it’s NOT necessarily TRUE that your weight gain CAUSED your Diabetes.
Do you have cold hands and cold feet? Well, your circulatory system is like the super highway for transporting fuel throughout the body. If we start damaging the walls of the blood vessels, then we start losing circulation and our hands and feet become cold.
The circulatory system supplies oxygen and glucose to our nerves. If we don’t get that blood flow, that oxygen, that glucose to those nerves, then the nerves start shutting down and we can start to see a condition called “Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy”. That’s burning, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, a debilitating condition. It keeps people from sleeping at night. If the fuel supply to the nerves of the eyes decreases your start having blurred vision or even worse, you could lose your sight.
We also look at your adrenals. Your adrenal glands are the STRESS glands of your body.
If you’ve been under a lot of stress for years, performing in school, a tough job, relationship challenges and more, your adrenal glands may be impacted. When your adrenal glands are under attack, you will have problems regulating your blood sugar, sleeping at night or having energy.
Everyone knows that the Pancreas plays a huge role in sugar processing because the Pancreas produces Insulin and Insulin is the hormone that allows sugar to get into all of your cells to be burned as fuel. If your pancreas is being damaged by stress and inflammation, then we start having a problem balancing blood sugar.
